ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH

The first duration Frank gave me a "rank" on vintage Barbie dolls, he pointed out one of these two dolls as a potential portrait model. The creative-active ideal that they were side-by-side and sort of looked allied and yet were unique unto themselves, intrigued me. From then on, they became "the Gemini" and were destined to make it into the cast. Like Frank uttered, I tried shooting other multiple doll layouts but was never blessed with the results. I think what made these two not the same was their hair and how it helped fill up the build.

More than anything else though, I think they signify the whole exemplar of this project . . . looking at these dolls as individuals. Expressions of gratitude to Frank, each of these dolls has a singular look, in spite of the performance that they are all basically cut from the same mold.


THOUGHTS FROM Artless, THE COLLECTOR

The thirty-next to the first doll in the Barbie Doll Portrait Project is in truth 2 dolls. Larry had been kicking around the exemplar of photographing dolls in multiples for some duration but has always been disappointed with the results, so this is wholly a treat. Finally he has some images that he finds gratifying. We both refer to them as “the gemini”, and just similar real twins, they direct the eye identical and individual at the same duration.
